About Sleepers River Recreation Area

Located within the northeastern section of the Northeastern Highlands of Vermont, the Sleepers River Recreation Area encompasses approximately 5,600 acres along the Sleepers River watershed. It is part of the Silvio O. Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge and managed by the U.S. Forest Service. The area features an uplifting mix of northern hardwood forests, coniferous stands, wetlands, and floodplain meadows, providing key habitat for a wide range of wildlife, including migratory birds, beavers, and various amphibians. The geology includes glacial deposits and bedrock outcrops, with the Sleepers River flowing through steep valleys and gentle floodplains. Historically, the area supported logging and small farming before being restored as a conservation and recreation site.
